NCAA FIRES BACK

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT YESTERDAY SIGNED A LAW TO KEEP THE 60 MILLION DOLLAR PENN STATE FINE IN THE COMMONWEALTH…AND THE NCAA RESPONDED WITH A FEDERAL LAWSUIT SAYING THE LAW VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION BY ATTEMPTING TO DISRUPT INTERSTATE COMMERCE AND CONFISCATE FUNDS INTENDED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE VICTIMS NATIONWIDE “TO BE USED SOLELY FOR THE BENEFIT OF PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS”. IN A STATEMENT RELEASED BY THE NCAA, CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER DONALD REMY SAID THE PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNMENT IS DOING “WHATEVER IT WANTS TO WHOMEVER IT WANTS.” PENN STATE, WHICH HAS MADE THE FIRST OF FIVE 12- MILLION DOLLARS PAYMENTS, AGREED TO THE NCAA SANCTIONS AND IS NOT INVOLVED IN THE LAWSUIT. CONGRESSMEN GLENN THOMPSON AND CHARLIE DENT ALSO CRITICIZED THE NCAA WEDNESDAY FOR “STONEWALLING” THEIR ATTEMPTS TO ELIMINATE THE SCHOLARSHIP REDUCTIONS AGAINST THE FOOTBALL TEAM, SAYING THOSE REDUCTIONS SIMPLY HURT THE CHANCES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET A COLLEGE EDUCATION.

SEARCHING FOR NEW PENN STATE PRESIDENT

PENN STATE HAS HIRED THE EXECUTIVE SEARCH FIRM ISAACSON-MILLER TO HELP SELECT THE SUCCESSOR TO PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON WHO IS STEPPING DOWN IN JUNE OF 2014. TRUSTEE KAREN PEETZ SAYS THE FIRM WAS TOLD TO MAKE ITS SEARCH “AS BROAD AS POSSIBLE” AND TO GO AFTER TOP-NOTCH “TRADITIONAL AND NONTRADITIONAL LEADERS”. ISAACSON-MILLER PLANS TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS AND CONDUCT SURVEYS AND FOCUS GROUPS TO DETERMINE WHAT QUALITIES PEOPLE WANT TO SEE IN THE NEXT PRESIDENT.

LOCAL SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT RETIRING

THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT JUST HIRED DR. TOM OTTO TO REPLACE RETIRING SUPERINTENDENT DENNIS MURRAY…AND NOW HOLLIDAYSBURG SUPERINTENDENT PAUL GALLAGHER HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE IS ALSO RETIRING AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. THE SEARCH WILL NOW BEGIN FOR A REPLACEMENT. A NUMBER OF OTHER HOLLIDAYSBURG DISTRICT LEADERS HAVE ALSO RESIGNED OR DECIDED TO RETIRE.

PARENTS CHARGED FOLLOWING TODDLER’S DEATH

13 MONTH OLD RYDEN THOMAS OF INDIANA DROWNED EARLIER THIS MONTH WHILE PLAYING IN THE BATHTUB WITH HIS 2 YOUNG SIBLINGS…NOW STATE POLICE HAVE LOCKED HIS PARENTS IN THE INDIANA COUNTY JAIL. TONYA THOMAS IS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT FOR LEAVING THE KIDS TO ANSWER A TEXT MESSAGE AND GO DOWNSTAIRS. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, WESLEY, ARE BOTH CHARGED WITH RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT. CHILD WELFARE OFFICIALS SAY THEIR INVESTIGATION UNCOVERED A PATTERN OF PARENTAL SUPERVISION PROBLEMS IN THE THOMAS HOUSEHOLD. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SET FOR MONDAY.

STATE POLICE IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY BELIEVE ALCOHOL WAS TO BLAME FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT SHORTLY BEFORE 11 TUESDAY NIGHT IN CROMWELL TOWNSHIP. 35 YEAR OLD JASON SNYDER OF ORBISONIA IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER. HIS PICKUP STRUCK A GUARDRAIL ALONG ROUTE 522, THEN ROLLED OVER SEVERAL TIMES, EJECTING SNYDER.
