Cold Temperatures Continue

Frigid temperatures will continue for the remainder of the week. Residents are reminded to use caution when outside. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect until noon today. Also, light snowfall yesterday resulted in about 1 to 2 inches of snow across the area. Most evening events scheduled across the area were cancelled or postponed. Speed reductions on area highways have been lifted.

Snowplow Truck Catches Fire

A State College Borough snowplow truck is destroyed after catching fire while clearing area roadways yesterday afternoon. The snowplow ignited on the ramp off of the University Drive overpass at College Avenue around 3:20 yesterday. Fire crews from the Alpha Fire Department responded to the blaze.

Vigil to Honor Paterno

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the passing of legendary Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno. Paterno died in January 2012 after a brief battle with lung cancer. According to the Centre Daily Times, a vigil will be held in Paterno’s memory at 7 pm tonight at the Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center on Park Avenue. Local nonprofit organization ‘Inspiration Way’ is hosting the event.

Coroner: Synthetic LSD Causes Fall

The Centre County coroner’s office says a 20-year-old Penn State student who died in November after falling from a downtown apartment balcony tested positive for marijuana and synthetic LSD. Late last year, State College police issued a warning about dangerous synthetic drugs after several overdoses in the area. The incident is one of at least seven falls from high locations in the borough over the past 2 years. Last weekend, a student fell approximately 16-feet from a balcony at the Palmerton Apartment Building.
