Penn State President Candidate

The future for one potential candidate to replace Penn State president Rodney Erickson is in question. According to Syracuse.com, Upstate Medical University President Dr. David R. Smith has been placed on leave by the State University of New York over allegations he padded his pay. The report says Smith was close to being named Penn State’s next president. Last week, Penn State trustees cancelled a special meeting planned for Friday when the announcement of a new president was said to be scheduled. 

Garman Theatre Future

The Bellefonte Borough Council will hold a special meeting to determine the future of the historic Garman Theatre on Monday. The public session will be held at Lambert Hall in Bellefonte at 7:30 p.m. The council is considering demolishing the historic site due to the damage suffered last year in a fire at the theatre. 

Penn State Blood Drive

The 20th annual Penn State-Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge is underway. Collections began on Monday. The Challenge helps maintain blood inventories in the Greater Alleghenies and Greater Lakes blood regions of the Red Cross during holiday seasons. Last year, Penn State won by 19 units of blood, thanks to a late surge. Each school hopes to collect at least 2,000 units of blood by the end of the challenge later this month. 

Road Work

East Calder Way between South Pugh Street and Humes Alley in downtown State College will be closed today from 8:30 am until noon for roadwork. Public Works crews are replacing a sidewalk in the 100 block of Calder Way. Work is weather permitting.
