PENN STATE STUDENT DIES

PENN STATE FRESHMAN EVA O’BRIAN, OF BERWYN, DIED PEACEFULLY SATURDAY AND WAS SURROUNDED BY HER FAMILY AT THE TIME OF HER PASSING. O’BRIAN WAS HIT BY A TRUCK WHILE JOGGING ALONG PARK AVENUE IN STATE COLLEGE BACK ON JULY 3RD. SHE WAS TRANSPORTED TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER BEFORE BEING FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA.

O’BRIAN WAS MOST RECENTLY RECOVERING FROM SEVERE BRAIN AND PELVIC INJURIES AT THE HOSPITAL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. SHE DIED AS A RESULT OF THOSE INJURIES SHE SUSTAINED IN THE INCIDENT.

A PENN STATE SPOKESWOMAN PREVIOUSLY STATED THAT O’BRIAN WAS ATTENDING SUMMER SESSION AND WAS ENROLLED IN THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. 

HIT AND RUN INVESTIGATION

POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR THE DRIVER IN A HIT AND RUN INVOLVING A PENN STATE STUDENT THAT OCCURED LAST WEEKEND. THE 21-YEAR-OLD STUDENT WAS STRUCK BY THE MOVING VEHICLE IN THE 500 BLOCK OF BLUE COURSE DRIVE LOCATED IN FERGUSON TOWNSHIP. THE DRIVER TOOK OFF AFTER HITTING THE STUDENT, WHO WAS LATER FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA WITH LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. 

MUD RACE

THE SNOW SHOE FIRE COMPANY HOSTED A TRUCK MUD RACE IN CENTRE COUNTY ON SUNDAY TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR THE COMPANY. A TOTAL OF 31 TRUCKS SIGNED UP TO MANEUVER THROUGH A MUDDY OBSTACLE COURSE, WITH HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS WATCHING FROM THE GRASS. ALL OF THE PROCEEDS RAISED FROM THE EVENT WILL GO TOWARDS HELPING THE FIRE COMPANY. CHIEF R.J. CASHER STATED THAT THE COMPANY IS PLANNING TO HOST A SIMILAR EVENT DURING LABOR DAY WEEKEND. 

KEYSTONE COUNTRY RIDE

MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE 2014 KEYSTONE COUNTRY RIDE THAT CONCLUDED AT HOLLIDAYSBURG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE TWO-DAY, 150-MILE BIKE RIDE FROM HOLLIDAYSBURG TO STATE COLLEGE AND BACK IS HELD ANNUALLY TO RAISE MONEY FOR MS RESEARCH.

ORGANIZERS WERE HOPING TO RAISE MORE THAN 500,000 DOLLARS BUT WON’T KNOW THE EXACT TOTAL UNTIL LATER THIS WEEK. 

PA TURNPIKE SPEED TO INCREASE

BEGINNING THIS WEEK, PENNSYLVANIA WILL BECOME THE 37TH STATE IN THE UNION TO HAVE A MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT OF 70 OR HIGHER ON MAJOR HIGHWAYS.

THE SPEED LIMIT WILL BE RAISED TO 70 MILES PER HOUR ON INTERSTATE 76 ALONG A 100 MILE STRETCH OF HIGHWAY BETWEEN THE BLUE MOUNTAIN INTERCHANGE AND THE MORGANTOWN INTERCHANGE. 

TRAIN KILLS SOMERSET COUNTY MAN

22-YEAR-OLD CHRISTOPHER REED, OF THE WINDBER AREA IN SOMERSET COUNTY, WAS KILLED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AFTER BEING HIT BY A TRAIN. REED WAS WALKING ALONG THE TRACKS IN SEWARD BEFORE BEING HIT BY A NORFOLK SOUTHERN TRAIN TRAVELING EASTBOUND.

REED WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. AN AUTOPSY IS SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY.
