State College Tree Lighting

The annual State College downtown tree lighting ceremony will take place tomorrow evening at the Allen Street gates along College Avenue. The event begins at 5:30, featuring holiday carols, cookies, hot chocolate and Mrs. Claus and Santa. Children, ages 12 and under, who donate a gift to Toys for Tots or a canned good for the State College Food Bank will be entered to win a chance to light the tree with Santa.


Scandal Costs Rise

Legal costs for Penn State stemming from the Jerry Sandusky scandal continue to rise. As of the end of August, expenses totaled more than $51.8 million. Once again, a breakdown of the spending is available online at Penn State’s Progress website. The sum does not include the $59.7 million in civil settlement costs Penn State owes to 26 of Sandusky’s victims.


Penn State Board Reform

Two State Senators will propose legislation today in hopes of making significant reforms to the structure of Penn State’s Board of Trustees. Senator John Yudichak from northeast PA and local senator Jake Corman will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. to introduce the legislation. According to a press release, Yudichak says The Board of Trustees needs realignment to conform to standards at other universities across the country.


Vehicle Break-In Reported

Ferguson Township Police are reminding residents to remove valuables from cars overnight after another car break in Sunday into Monday. Police say the incident occurred in a parking lot at Park Forest Apartments at 805 West Aaron Drive Building C. A change bag containing an unspecified about of money was removed through a broken window. Anyone with information should contact police at 1-800-479-0050.
