Paterno Hearing

A judge will hear oral arguments in the Paterno family lawsuit against the NCAA and Penn State today. The hearing is focused on a proposed subpoena the Paterno family wants to issue against both parties. The family is hoping to acquire documents from the Louis Freeh investigation regarding how the university handled the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and how the NCAA reached the decision to issue harsh sanctions against Penn State. Penn State objects the subpoena calling the demands unrealistic and costly. The hearing will be held at 10am at the Centre County Courthouse.

Borough Council

The State College Borough Council will meet tonight at 7:30 in the Municipal Building. Items on the agenda include the proclamation of this week to be Emergency Medical Services Week in State College, and this month to be Bicycle Awareness month in the borough. The 2013 Audit Report, Centre Tax Agency Report and confirming times, dates and streets for Arts Fest are some of the other topics also on the agenda. 

Click it or Ticket

Beginning today, officers in the commonwealth and nationwide will be stepping up enforcement of seat belt laws in an effort to get more people to buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign will run until June 1. Police will also be stepping up enforcement of child safety seat laws. In conjunction with the campaign, the Pennsylvania State Police will offer free child safety seat inspections statewide.  

Construction

South Burrowes street will be closed to traffic from West College Avenue to Calder Way today and tomorrow to replace the existing water line on College Avenue. The contractor for the State College Water Authority will also have lane restrictions and traffic pattern changes in effect on College Avenue from Burrowes Street to Hiester Street until Friday.  

Other Road Work

State College Borough Public Works Crews will continue concrete curb and sidewalk repairs on the 700 block of Edgewood Circle today. Work will continue until Friday between the hours of 7:30 and 5. Works Crews will also be performing street maintenance on the 900 Block of Southgate Drive until Thursday. 

Primary Elections

The General Primary Election is tomorrow. A big state ticket item on the ballot will be the governor’s race in Pennsylvania. 4 democrats are vying for a spot on the ballot in November’s election, while on the republican side; Governor Corbett will be challenged by Bob Guzzardi. In addition to the election races, all registered voters in The State College Area School District can yes or no to an $85 million referendum for upgrades to the high school. The proposed project would move all core academic spaces to the south side of Westerly Parkway, with some renovation of the newer spaces on the north side.
