Crash

 State Police in Philipsburg believe alcohol played a role in a crash where a pickup truck was hit by a train in Union Township.

 The accident occurred just after 1am on Saturday when 22 year Coty Johnson was driving a Chevrolet Silverado and attempted to turn off South Eagle Valley Road and into a driveway. The truck ended up getting stuck in a ditch and partially on railroad tracks.

 Police said Johnson was unable to remove the truck from the ditch, but was able to get out of the vehicle before it was struck by a train.No one was injured, but, Johnson was taken into custody at the scene for suspicion of DUI. He will be charged pending blood test results.

 Whitehall Road

 A detour on Whitehall Road, between Stonebridge Drive and Research Drive is scheduled to begin tomorrow.The detour could be in place as late as June 28, but PennDOT will lift the detour as early as June 25, if work progress allows.During the detour, traffic will be rerouted onto Blue course Drive and West College Avenue.

Cruise

 Over 300 registered cars and 100 motorcycles attracted thousands of people to Bellefonte over the weekend for the 25th annual Bellefonte Cruise.Several classic cars, some from the late 20’s and early 30’s were on display The event, which is held over Fathers Day weekend every year, began on Friday night and concluded yesterday with a 5k run and Diaper Dash races to benefit the Centre County YMCA.

Borough Council

The State College Borough Council will hold their regular meeting tonight in room 304 in the State College Municipal Building on Allen Street. Council is expected to review and vote on the discussed proposed changes by the Downtown State College Improvement District to the downtown parking plan. Also on the agenda is the potential approval of the 2014-2018 Capital Improvement Plan and CATA’s 2013-2014 budget.As always, the public is encouraged to attend the meeting.

Penn State Syracuse Tickets

Penn State football fans who wish to purchase tickets for the Nittany Lion’s season opener against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium can start ordering tickets today. The blue and white’s 127th season opener on August 31 will kick off at 3:30 and fans can call 1-800 NITTANY beginning at 10am today to secure their seats. The Penn State Alumni Association will also sponsor two events that weekend in conjunction with the game.

Transportation Hearing

The House Transportation Committee will hold another hearing today on Senate Bill 1, the 2 and a half million dollar proposed transportation bill.The bill, which has already passed the senate will improve the state’s bridges and repair the roads, but will also likely increase vehicle registration and drivers’ license fees as well as the price of gas.

Ride to Work Day

PennDOT is inviting motorcyclists to participate in National Ride to Work Day today. PennDOT secretary Barry Schoch (shock) says the day is a “great day for riders to high the freedom they experience while riding a motorcycle, but also a reminder for riders to share through road safely throughout the riding season.”
