Former Penn State president Graham Spanier has lost his request to receive early access to prosecution materials before Monday’s preliminary hearing.Lawyers for Spanier had asked for a transcript of his grand jury testimony, any potential documents the prosecution plans to introduce at the hearing and a list of potential witnesses along with written statements, but the requests were denied by Dauphin County Judge Todd A. Hoover.
Spanier, along with Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, face charges of perjury, failure to report suspected abuse, obstruction of justice, endangering the welfare of children and criminal conspiracy.
In an interview published by Fortune magazine, Louis Freeh defended the work in his report released last year on Penn State and their part in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Though Freeh couldn’t get into many details in the interview, the former FBI director is pleased that in his mind “not one fact” in the report was disputed.
The report, which continues to be under harsh criticism from several people including the family of the late Joe Paterno, found that university leadership reportedly concealed important facts related to the Jerry Sandusky investigation.The interview is scheduled to be in the August 12 issue of the magazine.
The State Correctional Institution at Rockview is on lockdown after a member of its staff was assaulted by an inmate. Though few details about the incident have been released, the assault, which is being investigated by state police, happened around 10:30 yesterday morning. The condition of the person who was assaulted has also not been released.
No Football Eve
The traditional pep rally that kicks of Penn State’s football season won’t happen this year. Penn State athletics confirmed to WTAJ that they will not hold Football Eve at Beaver Stadium this year primarily due to the team’s first game taking place in New Jersey and not Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions will open their 2013 season against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium on August 31.
The annual Last Cruise in State College will be held on Sunday. The annual Best of the Best Show will be held from 1-4 with the awards ceremony at 4. The Cruise around Beaver and College avenues will take place from 4:30-6pm. Although the State College Borough “Cruising Ordinance” will not be enforced, officers will continue to enforce vehicle code violations such as speeding and red light and stop sign violations.Officers will also take enforcement action for drivers doing “burn outs” and for operating a vehicle in a careless or reckless manner.

According to CBSSports.com, Penn State and West Virginia are close to finalizing a home and home series that will start in or after 2020. The two sides had talked about playing as early as 2018 but will likely have trouble squeezing in a game that early because of scheduling conflicts.The two teams played every year from 1947-1992 with Penn State dominating the overall series with 48 wins 9 losses and 2 ties.
A man accused in the January robbery of Kranich’s Jewelers in State College has been indicted on federal charges related to the incident.
According to the Centre Daily Times, Rodger K Williams was indicted on June 13. The indictment had been sealed in U.S. middle District Court until yesterday.He was ordered to be detained without bail and faces federal charges of interference with commerce by threats and violence, carrying a firearm during a crime of violence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also faces multiple felony charges in Centre County
Williams and 2 others stole $950,000 worth of merchandise in the January 9 robbery.
