HOUSE EXPLODES

A HOUSE IN TREASURE LAKE NEAR DUBOIS WAS DESTROYED IN AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE AROUND 2:30 MONDAY MORNING. ONE NEIGHBOR TOLD WTAJ THEY WERE REPLACING A GAS LINE WHEN IT BLEW UP THE HOUSE AT 16-76 CARRIBEAN ROAD. 2 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH MINOR INJURIES AND ONE DOG DID NOT MAKE IT OUT. POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING. DAMAGE COULD TOP 250-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

SON DUE IN COURT

30 YEAR OLD MATTHEW BALDESSARO IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY. STATE POLICE SAY HE ATTACKED HIS MOTHER ON NEW YEAR’S EVE AT THEIR HOME ON RUSTIC HOLLOW LANE IN TYRONE TOWNSHIP. 55 YEAR OLD DEBRA SUFFERED SEVERE HEAD AND FACIAL INJURIES. FAMILY MEMBERS SAY BALDESSARO HAD RECENTLY RETURNED FROM REHAB AND WAS ANGRY BECAUSE HE COULDN’T FIND HIS PILLS. HE’S IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON ON A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS BOND.

DEALER SENTENCED

A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED BALTIMORE NATIVE PATRICK BARNES TO 7 TO 20 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. A JURY WAS TO BE SELECTED FOR HIS TRIAL ON MONDAY, BUT INSTEAD BARNES PLEADED GUILTY TO MULTIPLE DRUG SALES IN 2011 AND 12.

SENTENCED IN FATAL DUI

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 47 YEAR OLD TODD MUMMERT OF SALIX WAS SENTENCED TO 3 MONTHS IN THE COUNTY JAIL, FOLLOWED BY HOUSE ARREST FOR 3 MONTHS, AND PROBATION FOR 42 MONTHS. MUMMERT PLEADED GUILTY TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER AND D-U-I IN CONNECTION WITH A FATAL CRASH IN JULY OF 2011. MUMMERT FAILED TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 219 AND ELTON ROAD IN RICHLAND TOWNSHIP AND HIS CAR COLLIDED WITH A MOTORCYCLE DRIVEN BY 47 YEAR OLD BRYON MCDERMOTT OF JOHNSTOWN, WHO WAS KILLED.

DRIVER INJURED

68 YEAR OLD DAVID SCHNARS OF PHILIPSBURG SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN A CRASH MONDAY EVENING ON PRESQUESISLE STREET IN THE BORO. STATE POLICE SAY SCHNARS STRUCK A CURB, THEN OVERCORRECTED AND STEERED INTO THE ON-COMING LANE OF TRAFFIC…HITTING A CAR DRIVEN BY 21 YEAR OLD STEPHANIE FORCEY OF PHILIPSBURG. SHE WAS NOT INJURED. SCHNARS WAS TAKEN TO UPMC ALTOONA.

ABOUT 140 PENELEC WORKERS WERE LOCKED OUT OF THEIR JOBS NOVEMBER 25TH…AND THEY’VE BEEN PICKETING OUTSIDE FIRSTENERGY CORPORATION LOCATIONS IN ALTOONA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. NEGOTIATIONS ARE SCHEDULED TO RESUME TODAY IN PITTSBURGH. FIRSTENERGY SAYS ROTATING CREWS ARE MAINTAINING SERVICE.

JOHNSON WAS NAMED INTERIM HEAD COACH AFTER BILL O’BRIEN DECIDED TO TAKE THE HEAD COACHING JOB WITH THE HOUSTON TEXANS…AND HE INTERVIEWED FOR THE TOP JOB…BUT IT WENT TO VANDERBILT’S FRANKLIN. JOHNSON PLANS TO CONTINUE COACHING ELSEWHERE.
